MY SMALL LAND

INTRODUCTION

Sarya is a 17-year-old Kurdish girl living in Saitama, Japan.
Until a few years ago, she was living an ordinary high school life, no different from other Japanese students of the same generation.
One day she loses her visa status, and her normal life is taken away from her.
Is it a “crime” for her to want to stay in Japan?

The Kurdish people are known as “the world's largest ethnic group without a nation. There is a community of about 2,000 people in Saitama Prefecture, but there have never been any cases of Kurds being recognized as refugees. And since 2017, when the project for this film began, the situation surrounding the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Immigration Control Act) has continued to worsen. ......

This current situation is portrayed through the eyes of a 17 year old girl by director Kawawada Ema, an up-and-coming member of director Kore-eda Hirokazu's filmmakers' collective “Bunpuku. The director, who has a British father and a Japanese mother, based on the feelings of identity she felt while growing up, brings to the screen the dignified way in which the protagonist, placed in an unreasonable situation, confronts a major problem, and follows in the footsteps of Kore-eda's “Nobody Knows” (2004), which he supported from the planning stage. The film reflects “Japan Today” in the lineage of Kore-eda's “Nobody Knows” (2004), which Kore-eda supported from the planning stage.

Starring in the film is Rina Arashi, a ViVi model with multiple roots in five different countries. She is a high school student, and her imposing performance, which is hard to believe that it is her debut film, freshly portrays the complex emotions of the main character, Sarya. Okudaira Daikane, who won many new actor awards for his role in “MOTHER” (20), plays the role of Sota, a boy whom Saariah opens up to. Also supporting this new talent are Sei Hiraizumi, Chizuru Ikewaki, Takashi Fujii, Han Han Hanae, and Sahel Rose.

The theme song “Ne w M o r n i n g” was written by noted artist ROTH BART BARON, and the staff includes Hidetoshi Shimiya, cinematographer of “Drive My Car” (21), and Xu Xiansheng, art director. The film won a Special Mention at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival/Amnesty International Film Awards, Japan's first such honor, and has attracted significant attention from around the world.
